Message from the Dean

Dean, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences 

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the website of Hawassa University's College of Education and Behavioral Sciences (CoEBS).

Founded in 2007 as the Faculty of Education, our College was established to serve Ethiopia’s education system by preparing qualified secondary school teachers. Today we have grown into a vibrant center of excellence in teaching education, educational management, behavioral sciences, and research - and training leveraging modern technology.

We are dedicated to societal development by producing competent educational and behavioral scientists. Our academic offerings now include four undergraduate programs:

  • Educational Planning and Management
  • Lifelong Learning and Community Development
  • Special Needs and Inclusive Education
  • Psychology

Under our college there is School of Tecacher education through which we collaborate with other colleges across the University to train secondary school teachers,   offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT), and provide professional development through induction programs and the Higher Diploma Program (HDP) for academic staff.

For advanced studies, CoEBS offers 11 Master’s and 5 Ph.D. programs in areas such as Educational Leadership, Counseling Psychology, and Curriculum and Instruction, and more. 

We foster an inclusive, diverse learning environment where every student can unlock their potential. Our programs prepare graduates to as teachers, psychologists, researchers, leaders, =, and educators.

Beyond the classroom, we are engaged in meaningful community, and national initiatives, including:

  • Establishing a Testing and Measurement Center to offer standardized assessments
  • Creating support centers for people with disabilities, and psychosocial care. 
  • Operating an on-campus secondary school and kindergarten serving over 300 students.


The College’s contributions to Ethiopia’s educational development have earned it Recognized by the Ministry of Education as one of the five national centers of excellence in teacher education and leadership, we help develop national textbooks and distance education materials.

Our faculty actively contribute to reputable international journals, we proudly produce the Ethiopian Journal of Education Studies to disseminate evidence-based insights policy makers, and practitioners.
